Aren’t plugins great? They make so many things easier or even possible. I’d like to caution you about plugins though. As wonderful as they are, they all take overhead. One thing that means is that they slow down your page load time. You don’t want people waiting for your site to load because if they have to wait too long they won’t. They’ll leave. Once they leave they probably won’t be back.
So what does that mean? No plugins? Perish the thought! What it means is get rid of plugins you are no longer using. Perhaps you found one that does something better than one you had. That’s great. Deactivate and then delete the old one.
Think before adding new plugins. Do you really need it or do you just think it’s cool? Will it add anything to your WordPress site? If not, don’t install it. Definitely use the plugins you need but not the ones you don’t need.
When I wrote about WordPress 3.0 I cautioned you to make sure your plugins still work. Some will not work after an upgrade. That’s why it’s necessary for you to deactivate ALL plugins before you upgrade and then activate them 1 at a time to make sure all is still well with your WordPress site.
Another caution – plugins can conflict with each other. Each time you add a new plugin, check to see that everything else still works.
Have fun with plugins but be aware of what they do and what they might do. The next post will be about some great WordPress plugins that add a lot to your site and make your life easier.
