Should You Blog About The Olympics If It Isn't Your Niche?
Of course you should. Isn't it inspiring to watch people who have worked and trained and sacrificed do great things on the world stage?
What can we learn - for example from the US men's gymnastic team? How about 'Never Give Up'! They lost their team leader but are not defeated. Will they get the gold? Maybe - maybe not. Is it important? Not in the least because they are there and are doing better than their best. Who can ask for more?
What about Stephanie Rice of Australia and Dara Torres (age 41) of the US? There are so many personal victories but every athlete aimed high and achieved. We can learn that we must never give up, aim high, and achieve our goals too.
To all the Olympic athletes - thank you for your inspiration!

Cathy -
Couldn't agree with you more. I am watching these Olympics not only for sport, but also for inspiration. And I am making a point to Blog about it all...
What about Michael Phelps? All that success and here is a young man who has struggled with ADHD his entire life.
Talk about inspiration! Talk about controversy and breaking the mold. Research has not found any "positive attributes" as a direct result of ADHD...
Hmm... Funny! How do we explain Michael Phelps? I see some off the chart positives right there!
Great post Cathy!

Rory - your comment made me think about knowing 'the story behind the story'. Do we need to know that Michael Phelps struggled with ADHD his entire life? No - we can still admire his gift for swimming. Is it BETTER if we know his story? Absolutely! The next time he swims, look at the determination and total concentration on his face as he gets ready. Really - an inspiration for all of us!
Blogging about current events truly is appropriate regardless of what your niche is. I never thought too much about it before.
But now that you mentioned it.....everyone can relate to something about it. Achieving goals, parenting, stress, overcoming obstacles, travel, crisis, good sportsmanship, honor, surrendering, being an ambassador for your country, etc. These come to mind right off the bat.
I remember what it was like when my daughter Nune won the silver medal in butterfly for All City High School swimming in Philadelphia 4 years in a row. It wasn't the Olympics but she overcame health challenges as well as competing in the sport to master and exceed. Like Michael Phelps, she led her relay team in the free style to gold metal status twice. Can you tell I am proud?
It's exciting to see all the swimmers do so well. Only 3 get the recognition but all Olympians should be honored for excelling in their field.
There is a lesson there...Grace even though you don't win. You still have achieved so many things.
ALL of them are Champions! Woo-Hoo!
Thanks Cathy for the food for thought.
