The WordPress Themes repository has a new home. While themes.wordpress.net is still there, it is no longer active. The new theme directory is at wordpress.org/extend/themes/ which is where you also find the plugins directory, the forums, the WordPress blog and everything else related to WordPress.
This is a good move for WordPress. They are slowly but surely getting everything under one umbrella making it easier for everyone to find what they need. Another benefit for all of us is that the themes will now be checked to make sure they meet some requirements before they are added. No more falling in love with a theme only to find out that it doesn’t work!
Since it was only released 2 days ago, there aren’t a lot of themes there yet, but you can bet that it will fill up quickly with lots of great themes that work. Check it out and keep visiting for more great themes.
I think it’s a great place for newbies to find themes, although due to their ‘restrictions’/requirements, I think a lot of good and free themes won’t be listed like they are on New WordPress Themes dot net.
Good thought! I agree to a point. I sort of like the fact they WordPress will be making sure the themes work. Before, you had to test the theme yourself AFTER you went to the trouble of getting it on your blog. And WordPress isn’t the only place I look for themes either. I have found some really great themes elsewhere – and yes – free ones too. So – don’t restrict yourself to WordPress when looking for themes but do make sure the theme you pick works!

It’s about time WordPress centralized themes. It will be much easier for blog owners to pick up a free theme, and while they are there some plugins as well. That’s a good move for WordPress.

Interesting topic… seems freebies will always rule against something you can purchase and have exclusive rights to…
I've never personally been a fan of free templates and themes… I will take a theme layout, strip it down some and add my own graphics etc, thereby making the theme look like a static site, with all the bells and whistles that WP is known for…
